Syrian born swimmer Yusra Mardini left her war torn country in August 2015 with her sister and credits swimming with saving her life.

When the motor on a dinghy she was travelling in, in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea, broke and was on the brink of capsizing, Mardini jumped out along with two other people and pushed it to shore over a three hour period. Originally catching the attention of a swimming coach and starting training for the 2020 Olympics, Mardini represented a small team of Refugee Olympic Athletes at last month's Rio Games, competing in the 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.
